Our History

Sam and Francis Bailey opened the Grog Shop in late 1972. Seventy three years earlier, their father, Frank P. Bailey had started the still thriving business now known as Bailey's General Store. When it opened, The Grog Shop was the only liquor store on the island. More than fifty years later, we remain the largest shop with the biggest selection. The shop has always supplied a carefully curated selection of wine, spirits, beer. For the cigar aficionado, we featured Sanibel's only walk-in cigar humidor.  Always priding ourselves on maintaining reasonable prices, we don't charge our customers an "Island Premium". 

In 2022, Hurricane Ian devastated the islands and brought seven feet of water into the shop.  Just two months shy of our fiftieth anniversary, we were closed down.  Ultimately, our old shop was torn down and we set our efforts towards renovating the old gas station on the Bailey's Center site.  In November of 2023, we completed the renovations and reopened in the historic gas station on Periwinkle near Tarpon Bay Road.  A new chapter in the history of the Grog Shop began.  We adapted to our new smaller location with a large cabinet humidor.  Once Bailey's Center is rebuilt, we expect to move into the new center in a larger space and return to the proud tradition of our Walk-In Humidor.
